If you are coming from the UK or USA, you will understand that, free children school are run like Nigerian’s private schools.

I have come to realise that, there is a lot of hype on children’s education in Nigeria. A lot of Proprietor/ess start schools to make money and some of them don’t care about you or your children. It is a money making venture or business for them.

So, what some of them do is to go to Britain and employ an Oyinbo or whiteman or woman. Put them as Headmaster of their school and then, charge the parent “excessive” school fees.

It is unacceptable. I work hard for my money. Some of these expensive schools charge between 500,000 naira to 2 Million Naira per year. For What?

Yes. They are some quality schools in Lagos. I have to say that. But, most of them are hyped.

My advice is to go around your neighbourhood or where you live. Gear yourself up. You will see the good, the bad and the ugly.

Arm yourself with questions to ask and ask them.

You will find some good schools in your area.

Most importantly, speak to the owner and ask what educational qualifications they have and their plans for the school.

My children go to a school near us. Why? The fees are reasonable. It is near to home, so no school bus palaver or problems. They can wake up at a reasonable time in the morning. Academically, the school is great. I have seen improvements in my children’s school work. They have weaknesses in their facilities. But, who cares? What I care about is their education. Also, it is a Christian school. I forgot to add that, my children are picking up Yoruba songs far and they are learning about Nigerian culture.

In the UK or USA, you don’t have to buy textbooks for your children’s school. But, in Nigeria, you will have to pay extra money or naira for their school textbooks.

Remember, the good old days, when your parents asked you to go and buy your school textbooks. It is still happening.

I was surprised to find that, after paying lots of naira for our children’s private school, we still have to buy textbooks.

Anyway, this is about saving you money. So, don’t buy from your children’s school unless you have money to waste. They make over 100% to 200% profit from the school textbooks.

You will save money by buying at CMS (Kakawa Street). I buy from Hope Lawal BookStand (not a bookshop o!). sometimes, I go to Ojuelegba and buy from Abikoye Bookshop.

If you have more than 2 children, you will be saving a lot of money.

As you are aware that, a lot of fraud take place in Nigeria, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Some banks will charge you for provide SMS alerts to your mobile phone, every time a withdrawal is made from your bank account.

The cost is 100 naira per month and it varies per bank.

When you are opening your bank account, there is a section where you can tick and request for this. Send the SMS to a MTN mobile phone because, MTN has the largest network coverage in Nigeria. So, if you travel to your village to visit your relatives, you will still receive the alert.

If you did not withdraw the money. Contact your Relationship Manager, immediately and stop all future withdrawals and contact your customer care department as well. I hope that, you are not using those old fashioned banks.

How to save money on Glo, Zain, MTN recharge cards

I am happy that, u r reading my blog.

It has been confirmed that, there is "recession" or "global meltdown" or whatever financial analysts decide to call it. One thing remains d same and that is, people are loosing their jobs, homes, moneys and investments.

So, we need to save money and cut back on our expenses.

If u live in Nigeria, u will agree that, mobile phones companies are milking people dry with their rates.

For instance, top up or load 100 naira onto your MTN fone and u will be spending less than 2 mins dependin on your tariff.

Most people use MTN and they do not bother to check the new entrants in d market. They include: Visafone, Zoom and Etisalat.

These new entrants have better rates and offer bonuses to call people on the same network.

Zoom offers free weekend calls. They have d cheapest call rate to any GSM no at 16 naira per min.

Visafone is commonly used by most Call Centres. It tells me that, their rates are good.

I dont top up or load Glo or MTN cuz they charge too much.

But, MTN Blackberry service is d best in Nigeria as far as I am concerned. It costs 5000 naira per month.

Go to a wholesaler where u live and buy in bulk. Bulk means, u have to buy 5 cards of 200 naira Zoom, for instance.

For instance, I used to buy 5000 naira MTN from a Call centre. But, I saved 250 naira by buying d same cards from a wholesaler. Saving costs.

Go to the websites of Glo, Zain, Mtn, Zoom, starcomms, visafone, etisalat and check out promos and how u can SAVE money.

FREE Summer Activities to Do With the Children

• Family Games

On a nice sunny day, go to your local park with the kids and have different games such as 3-legged races, potato sack races, small ball on a spoon races, relay races, obstacle courses, or better still make up some games with the children. Also, this is great exercise for everyone and loads of fun.

• Go to the Local Library

You will find out that, children love to read in the library. Also, reading books is much better for your children than television. I try to go to the library with my children on Thursdays every week. They get the opportunity to read different books, borrow books, videos and use the internet. Library Membership is free for everyone.

• Watching the Clouds

Late at night, in your garden or your local park, spread out a blanket, have some popcorn or other snack and a cold drink and lay on the blanket with everyone’s head touching each other on the floor. Try and form different shapes with your bodies and watch the clouds. Ask the children to name what shape or animal they can see in the clouds. Or count the stars.

• Have a Yard Sale with Drink Stand

I am sure that, you will like to get rid of those unwanted, un-needed and unnecessary items that you have in your garage or loft.

You can make money with those things, and don't you just love making money? Also, children love making money, so allow them to set up a drink stand.

Tell them that, from the sale they make, they can tithe on 10%, Invest 50% and spend 40% on whatever they want. They can put the money to be invested in their piggy bank and save for that special toy they want to buy.

This will teach your children marketing, money management, and responsibility. Allow your children to make their own drink, their own stand, set their own price and to run their entire drink sale on their own.

• Water Fight

You can start your day by going to different place and then end the day with a water fight. You can use water guns, water balloons, squirt guns, cups of water or anything you can get your hands on. Attack each other with the water guns.

• Swimming

Most children love to swim, and the most important benefit is that swimming is fantastic exercise! Some parents may be shocked to learn that children as young as 10 months old can learn to swim. You can visit your local swimming pool or a lake and swim. Teach your children as young as possible to swim, to dive, and to not be afraid of the water. • Aquariums

Children love to go to aquariums. You can watch out for coupons in the newspapers or in retail shops that, offer KIDS GO FREE TO ATTRACTIONS. All you have to do is pay for the adult and the child goes free. If you are in the United Kingdom, it is always in the local paper in the month of May. Cut the coupons out and save a lot of money on entrance tickets.

Take your digital camera and take lots of pictures of the different fishes. It is an educative trip for the children and you. Save some more money by making your sandwich and drinks from home and taking them with you.


Amusement Parks and Zoos

Amusement parks and Zoos can be very expensive. But, you can save money on the FREE KID ENTRANCE TICKET. Remember that, your children are only children for a short period of time, and it is good to take advantage of these experiences.

Even if you are on a budget, you can still save some money for months just to be able to spend one day at an amusement park with the family and they children will thank you for it.

Consider that day you're family vacation. Make a big deal of it, look forward to it and enjoy yourselves while you're there.

• Fishing

If you decide to swim in a lake with the children. Then you can throw some poles out there as well and teach your children how to fish. Fishing fis a lot of fun, and it is great fun for the whole family. Try and read up on safety tips for teaching children to fish.

You don’t have to spend thousands of money to have fun with the children. It can be free and fun. You can then repeat this every year with the children. And your children can do this with their own children as well.
